‘When You Compare’: Micah Richards Shares Strong Opinion on Sterling vs. Martinelli
In a surprising turn of events, Raheem Sterling could soon make his highly anticipated Arsenal debut in the upcoming north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
The potential debut marks a significant chapter in Sterling’s career as he aims to rejuvenate his form under Mikel Arteta’s guidance at Arsenal.
Notably absent from Lee Carsley’s first England squad for the international break, Sterling has not donned the national jersey since December 2022.
Instead of joining his fellow Englishmen, Sterling will remain in London to integrate into Arteta’s system—a move that signals his determination to prove himself once again in the Premier League.
Sterling’s decision to join Arsenal wasn’t taken lightly. The 29-year-old winger, who boasts 82 caps for England, clearly believes he can compete at the highest level, even against the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, two of Arsenal’s most dynamic attackers.
Micah Richards, a well-respected pundit and former England international, weighed in on the upcoming rivalry within the Arsenal squad during his appearance on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.
Richards boldly stated that Sterling might offer something that Martinelli and Trossard currently lack. “The one thing he has more than anyone is the timing of his runs. He will get more chances,” Richards explained.
He added, “So if you look at Martinelli, very good dribbler, if you look at Trossard, really good finisher, can change a game with his composure in front of goal, but Raheem has got pace and he can run in behind.
And the timing of his runs are really good. So I think it could be a really good signing as long as he buys into everything that Arteta wants to do.”
Richards’ comments highlight the unique qualities Sterling brings to the table—qualities that could make him an invaluable asset for Arsenal. But while Richards is optimistic about Sterling’s potential impact, the competition remains fierce.
Interestingly, Sterling’s arrival might also benefit Kai Havertz, who has previously lauded the winger’s experience and playing style. “It is nice to play with him. He has a lot of experience and knows how to move, and it helps you a lot if you have such experienced players next to you,” Havertz said back in 2022.
As Arsenal fans eagerly await Sterling’s debut, it’s clear that his presence has already begun to shift dynamics within the squad. Whether Sterling will quickly leap ahead of Martinelli and Trossard in the pecking order remains to be seen, but his influence is undeniable.
