Thomas Tuchel Declines Man United Offer as Ten Hag’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Manchester United’s turbulent start to the Premier League season has placed manager Erik ten Hag under mounting pressure. According to reports, the club’s top target to replace the Dutchman has already rejected the role, raising serious questions about the future direction of the Red Devils.
Ten Hag, who was hired in 2022 to revive Manchester United, has struggled to find consistency this season, with the team losing three of their first six Premier League matches. Defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, both by 3-0 margins at Old Trafford, followed by a 2-1 loss to Brighton, have left fans questioning the manager’s tactics and approach.
Manchester United’s only two wins came against Fulham and Southampton, and the club hasn’t scored at Old Trafford in the league since their August 16 victory over Fulham. Despite significant summer spending, the team appears to be moving backward, and their struggles have prompted speculation that Ten Hag’s tenure could be nearing its end.
Reports indicate that Thomas Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, was approached by Manchester United during the summer as their primary candidate to succeed Ten Hag. Tuchel reportedly met with United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco to discuss his vision for the club.
However, it seems the talks hit a roadblock. The Guardian reports that Tuchel ultimately removed himself from consideration, feeling that Ratcliffe and the club’s leadership were not going to offer him the managerial role. This rejection leaves Manchester United with limited options should they choose to part ways with Ten Hag.
Other potential replacements, such as Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi, have taken on new roles, with Pochettino managing Chelsea and De Zerbi leading Brighton. As a result, Tuchel remains the most straightforward candidate for United if they seek a managerial change.
While Ten Hag remains in charge for upcoming fixtures against Porto and Aston Villa, further losses could trigger a managerial shake-up during the international break. The Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford appears precarious unless a remarkable turnaround can be achieved in the coming weeks.
