Chelsea supporters might be disappointed to find out about the goalkeeper they nearly signed before Robert Sanchez.
Sanchez, who currently plays for Chelsea, has not earned much support from the fanbase, and recently, he lost his position as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper to Filip Jorgensen. Jorgensen impressed once again with his performance, keeping a clean sheet in Chelsea’s dominant 4-0 win against Southampton in their latest Premier League match.
While Southampton was far from a challenging opponent, Chelsea desperately needed a strong performance, and that’s exactly what they delivered. Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, Levi Colwill, and Marc Cucurella secured the victory as Chelsea aims to maintain its push for a crucial Champions League spot.
Neto, who played as a striker in the game, was exceptional. Aside from scoring, he shared a humorous insight into why he enjoys playing as a forward.
According to a recent report by Chelsea news writer Simon Phillips on his Substack, Chelsea was close to signing Matz Sels, the current Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, before they decided on Robert Sanchez.
Phillips explained, “Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton in the summer of 2023, but at that time, they were exploring several options. One of those options was Matz Sels, who was with Strasbourg. SPTC sources have confirmed that Sels was on the verge of joining Chelsea before they ultimately chose Sanchez. Following Chelsea’s decision, Sels went to Nottingham Forest in the winter transfer window.”
It seems that many Chelsea fans would have preferred to see Sels join the club over Sanchez.
