Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United is under serious threat following a disastrous start to the season. A 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday has left the Dutchman’s future hanging in the balance, with growing pressure from both fans and the club hierarchy. The performance was widely considered one of the worst in United’s recent history, further intensifying calls for a managerial change.

Ten Hag, who was almost sacked over the summer by Ineos after a series of poor results, was handed a one-year contract extension. However, this decision has since come under scrutiny, as sacking him now would cost United significantly more than if they had acted during the offseason. With crucial upcoming matches against Porto and Aston Villa, many believe these could be the final two games of Ten Hag’s reign if he fails to turn the tide.

Amid the speculation over who could succeed Ten Hag, several names have emerged, including Gareth Southgate and Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, a surprising candidate has also been tipped for the role – United legend Roy Keane. Keane, known for his fiery personality and uncompromising approach, hasn’t held a managerial position since 2019 when he left his role as assistant manager at Nottingham Forest.

Despite his long absence from the managerial scene, many believe that Keane could be the man to restore Manchester United’s identity. Speaking on talkSPORT, former player Andy Townsend weighed in on the possibility of Keane taking the reins at Old Trafford.

“I don’t even know if Keano would want to do it,” Townsend said. “But what he would do – if he said he would take the job, you can imagine what it would be like in his first game back at Old Trafford. The expectancy would be massive.”

Townsend also pointed out the need for change in United’s dressing room: “The players need shaking up. Get hold of them and get them going. If you can’t handle that, you’re at the wrong club for sure and almost in the wrong business.”

Whether or not Keane is willing to step back into management remains to be seen, but the mere suggestion of his return has reignited excitement among the Old Trafford faithful.
