Ralf Rangnick’s Sole Man Utd Signing Poised for Debut After Joining Training

Ralf Rangnick’s only signing during his time at Manchester United could make his first-team debut against Luton Town on Sunday.

The Austrian took over at Old Trafford on an interim basis from December 2021 to May 2022, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the remainder of the season as United were willing to wait until the end of the season to appoint a permanent manager, with Rangnick taking on a consultancy role at the club.

Rangnick, however, left the club after Erik ten Hag was appointed manager, and he never resumed his off-field duties.

Toby Collyer, a 20-year-old centre-back signed from Brighton & Hove Albion when he was 18 years old, is the only reminder of the 65-year-old’s miserable spell.

The England youth international has appeared seven times for the U21s in Premier League 2 this season and started twice in the EFL Trophy in his preferred holding midfield position.

Though he has yet to make his senior debut, he was spotted in first-team training ahead of United’s Premier League match at Kenilworth Road.

Collyer could earn a spot on the bench for the first time this season, as Ten Hag has yet to welcome Mason Mount back from injury, and Sofyan Amrabat has only recently returned from Morocco duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The emergence of 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in the first-team fold this season, and his appearance as one of the first names on the Dutchman’s team sheet, will give Collyer and 18-year-old forward Ethan Williams – who also trained with the first-team group – confidence that there is a path into the senior side.

Though Rangnick did not make any first-team signings during his temporary tenure in the 2022 January window, he did criticise the club for failing to try to sign Liverpool-bound Luis Diaz, Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, and Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez, all of whom moved that month despite the Old Trafford board claiming no one suitable was available.
