Phil Foden’s England Spot in Jeopardy as Guardiola Reveals Health Struggles
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hinted that Phil Foden may be forced to withdraw from the England squad due to a lingering virus.
Foden, who played a pivotal role in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, has been grappling with illness since the start of the Premier League season, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming international fixtures.
Foden missed Manchester City’s 4-1 triumph over Ipswich Town and their recent 3-1 victory against West Ham United after experiencing discomfort during the season opener against Chelsea.
The 24-year-old forward, who was instrumental in City’s title-winning campaign last season, has been notably absent from the pitch in recent weeks. His absence has been felt, particularly after such a successful summer with the national team.
Guardiola, speaking ahead of City’s upcoming fixtures, expressed uncertainty about Foden’s chances of joining the England squad for the Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
“I don’t think so right now. I think he will not go, but I don’t know,” Guardiola stated. “He doesn’t feel well — otherwise he would be here. But like I said before, national teams decide.”
The City manager revealed that Foden has been dealing with a stomach virus, which has hindered his ability to train and play. “He doesn’t feel good. It’s his stomach, a little, little virus. Some people said antibiotics and so on will be fine,” Guardiola explained, suggesting that Foden’s recovery might take longer than initially anticipated.
Foden’s potential withdrawal from the England squad would be a significant blow for interim manager Lee Carsley, who named the City star in his first squad selection since taking the reins. With four goals in 41 appearances for England, Foden has become a key figure for the national team since his debut in 2020.
As the international break looms, England fans and staff alike will be hoping for a swift recovery for Foden, whose presence on the field has been crucial in recent campaigns.
