Pep Guardiola Refutes Premier League Title Speculation and Provides Man City Future Update
Pep Guardiola has emphasized that he’s not done yet at Manchester City, dismissing claims that no other manager can secure the Premier League title while he’s in charge.
City stands on the brink of making history by winning their fourth consecutive title if they defeat West Ham at the Etihad, marking an astonishing six titles in seven years.
Despite speculation about his future, Guardiola is resolute about returning for another season, committed to continuing his journey with the club.
“Yes, I have a contract,” said Guardiola. “I want to be here next year, yes. It is wrong (that City’s dominance is bad for the Premier League). If the narrative was that I was winning by 20 points I would say ‘yes, I’m a genius, I’m so good.’
“But it’s not. The Premier Leagues we have won the others could have won – and Arsenal can win this one. My opinion about Liverpool for all these years, nothing changes. A win is a win.
“The winners smell good, and everyone wants to copy that. There is a lot of work behind it – a lot. Like Liverpool were and like Arsenal have been this season. There is a lot of work. Nothing you have done in the past gives you the right (to win). It’s completely the opposite.
“It’s a lot of work for all departments – the backroom staff, the medical department, the office department, how they care about those few, few inches. It is ridiculous how good the balance is. Otherwise you cannot be where we are.”
Guardiola came in third behind Chelsea led by Antonio Conte in his debut season as City manager, while Jurgen Klopp steered Liverpool to victory in 2020 ahead of City.
City secured two of their previous titles under Guardiola by defeating Liverpool on the last matchday.
With Arsenal clinching the title with two games remaining last year under Mikel Arteta’s leadership, the champions are aware that Arteta’s team could seize the crown if City falter against West Ham and Arsenal defeat Everton at the Emirates.
In 2018, City made history by being the first team to reach a hundred points.
Just a year later, they achieved another milestone by becoming the inaugural club to secure a domestic Treble.
Following that, they replicated Manchester United’s Treble victory by triumphing in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
This upcoming Saturday, they are set to clash with United in the FA Cup Final for the second consecutive season, aiming to potentially achieve a unique double Double.
Guardiola attributes City’s achievements to their fearless squad, emphasizing the importance of players willing to challenge him.
He acknowledges the conflicts that arose within the team throughout the season, but underscores that how they resolve these conflicts is pivotal. Guardiola expresses confidence in the team’s focus and awareness of what they’re playing for.
He recognizes the rarity of the opportunity, emphasizing that winning four consecutive titles is virtually impossible and unlikely to recur in their lifetimes.
“We have to live it, we have to enjoy it. I have said many times about these huge personalities that without them we have no chance. The players have already had a good season – and nothing changes depending on the last two games.
“West Ham, especially the four players they have up front, can create something unexpected. That is what I am concerned with at the moment.”
