Pep Guardiola misses Man City legend and regrets letting him to go

Last summer, Manchester City bid farewell to club legend Ilkay Gundogan, a decision they now reportedly regret.

The German midfielder, who spent seven years at the Etihad Stadium, left as a free agent to join Barcelona ahead of the 2023/24 season, signing a two-year deal.

Gundogan has already shown his value to the Catalan club, playing a pivotal role in their 4-2 victory over Valencia on Monday.

Barcelona-based outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola regrets the departure of Ilkay Gundogan from the club last summer.

Gundogan, who made 304 appearances for City and was a key player during his time at the Etihad Stadium, was greatly missed by Guardiola.

The German midfielder achieved significant success at City, including winning the Champions League in his final game for the club.

During the current campaign, Manchester City has not been as dominant as they were last season, and part of the reason for this decline is attributed to Ilkay Gundogan’s departure.

The German midfielder not only served as a leader in the City dressing room but also proved to be one of the most intelligent players on the pitch at 33 years old.

There were speculations that Manchester City offered Ilkay Gundogan a one-year deal with an option to extend for another season. However, Gundogan’s representatives were pushing for at least a two-year guaranteed contract.

This is why Barcelona’s proposal of a three-year deal held significant appeal. Additionally, the player’s was reportedly in favor of a move to Barcelona.

Guardiola’s team is currently on track to win the Premier League and FA Cup this season.

However, their recent Champions League exit highlighted instances where Gundogan’s contributions were sorely missed.

While it’s understandable that Manchester City miss the services of the Barcelona star, it appeared to be the appropriate time for the midfielder to embark on a new chapter in his career.
