Man Utd Target Dan Ashworth Eyes Chelsea Raid in First Move as Sporting Director

Manchester United are preparing to add Chelsea analyst Kyle Macaulay to their team, with Dan Ashworth set to become sporting director.

According to reports, the Red Devils’ plans for building Ashworth’s team are already coming together. Macaulay collaborated with Newcastle’s current sporting director while at Brighton.

Macaulay worked closely with Graham Potter but stayed with the Blues after the coach was fired in April 2022.

The 37-year-old recruitment ace first worked with the former Chelsea manager at Ostersunds as a performance analyst before following Potter to Swansea, Brighton, and finally west London.

In his role with Potter, the former Aberdeen and Alloa player served as a liaison between coaching and recruitment staff before being named to a team led by Joe Shields and Jim Fraser to oversee talent management and recruitment.

It is not the only Brighton player that United has been linked to in recent days.

The Old Trafford club is said to be interested in the Seagulls’ current head of recruitment, Sam Jewell, but could face competition from Chelsea, who may try to lure him away from the Amex Stadium.

Ashworth hopes to hire a ‘experienced head of recruitment’ and expand his team. Sam Williams, the technical director at Ipswich, is planning a move to the northwest.

Newcastle’s manager was in the stands at St James’ Park when the Magpies drew with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Eddie Howe stated after the game that he was unable to provide an update on Ashworth’s situation, despite the fact that the Newcastle manager had hoped for a quick resolution on Friday.

He said: “Nothing as far as I’m aware. Obviously, it’s been in the news a lot and usually with these things that means something is going to happen. But as we speak now, we’ve had no contact [from United].” Howe added: “It’s an unusual situation. I’m used to speculation around players but this is different. Hopefully, there’s a quick solution.”
