Arne Slot, the Dutch mastermind behind Liverpool’s latest triumph, delivered a tactically astute analysis of Manchester United’s shortcomings following a resounding 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The win not only solidified Liverpool’s position at the top of the Premier League, alongside Manchester City, but also highlighted the tactical disarray currently plaguing United under Erik ten Hag.

Slot, who has seamlessly transitioned into his role at Liverpool, faced his first significant challenge in the form of a high-stakes encounter against Manchester United, one of the fiercest rivalries in English football.

Liverpool’s dominant performance was capped by goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, showcasing a side that has yet to concede a goal in the league this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Slot offered a detailed breakdown of Manchester United’s tactics, comparing their current approach to last season’s strategies.

“Last season, there was man-marking in the midfield, and they pressed with the seven and 11 [the wingers]. So with the striker, and one of the wingers jumped with him,” Slot explained. “This season, they are more with a 9 and 10 press, so they’re more in a 4-4-2. So that’s different, of course.”

Slot also highlighted the tactical vulnerabilities of United’s current setup. “Their style is also—this is maybe last season, I don’t remember that well—but their full-backs, nine out of ten times, are really high, and then Casemiro comes in between,” Slot noted. “So, if you pick up the ball and you can keep Diaz and Mo Salah high, then you’re constantly in a one-on-one situation.”

The Dutch manager emphasized the importance of having aggressive midfielders who can continuously run and win duels, which was instrumental in Liverpool’s victory. “We had three of them today that kept running, and if they arrive in a duel, they are aggressive enough to win it. So that was, I think, one of the main reasons why we could win today,” Slot concluded.

On the other hand, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag attributed the defeat to individual errors, particularly focusing on two key mistakes that shifted the momentum in Liverpool’s favor.

“It’s quite simple. We were in the game. It was equal after half an hour then we made two big mistakes and Liverpool took them really well,” ten Hag admitted.

He acknowledged the clinical nature of Liverpool’s finishing, especially the third goal by Salah, which effectively sealed United’s fate. “When you are 2-0 down against Liverpool, they are very dynamic. We brought someone on with legs. We tried to get it to 2-1… then we made another mistake. It was a really clinical finish from Mohamed Salah.”

As United languish in 14th place in the Premier League table, ten Hag will need to address these tactical flaws urgently before their next fixture against Southampton after the international break.
