Guardiola Reveals Man City’s Replacement Strategy for Julian Alvarez
In a recent development that has sent ripples through the footballing world, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has unveiled the club’s plans following the imminent departure of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid.
The Argentina international, who joined City from River Plate just two seasons ago, has decided to seek new challenges in Spain after expressing frustration over limited opportunities in crucial matches.
Alvarez, who found himself on the periphery of City’s starting lineup during key games, has agreed to a €95 million (£81.5 million) deal with Atletico Madrid.
Despite making 31 Premier League appearances in the 2023/24 season—largely due to injuries to Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland—Alvarez felt his time in Manchester had run its course.
Guardiola, speaking ahead of the highly anticipated Community Shield clash against Manchester United, acknowledged Alvarez’s decision with understanding and respect. “It was a joy to work with him,” Guardiola said, reflecting on his time with the Argentine forward.
“I learnt a lot from him, and hopefully, he can find what he was looking for. He believes his period here must be over, so both clubs arrive at an agreement. He’s incredibly loved by the team for his behavior, but like I said many times for many players, he wants to leave and have a new challenge.”
Earlier this summer, Alvarez had hinted at his dissatisfaction with being “left out” during significant matches, which raised questions about his future at the club.
Although he later clarified his comments, emphasizing his happiness at City, the prospect of a move to Atletico Madrid quickly gained momentum during his participation in the Paris Olympics with the Argentina national team.
With Alvarez’s departure on the horizon, Guardiola has hinted that City may explore the transfer market to bolster their squad. While the club has remained relatively quiet in the transfer window, securing only the signing of winger Savinho, Guardiola suggested that a move for a new midfielder or defender could be on the cards.
“Yeah, we will see. If we need someone, the price we have to buy [has to be right]; otherwise, it makes no sense,” Guardiola stated. “Maybe a holding midfielder who can play central defender or a central defender who can play in the position of Rodri.”
The 21-year-old academy graduate James McAtee and Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb, who have impressed during pre-season, are potential internal replacements for Alvarez. However, Guardiola’s comments indicate that City may still be active in the transfer market as they look to maintain their dominance in English and European football.
