From West Ham to Dortmund: The Forgotten EPL Stint of Dortmund UCL finalist Manager Edin Terzic
Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic once held a position in the Premier League that has largely been forgotten.
On Tuesday evening, Borussia Dortmund caused one of the biggest surprises of the season by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
PSG were heavily favored to advance to the final at Wembley next month, especially with Kylian Mbappe aiming to secure his first Champions League title before departing the club this summer.
Even after Dortmund’s 1-0 victory in the first leg last week, the expectation remained in PSG’s favor.
However, the Bundesliga side managed to replicate that scoreline at the Parc des Princes, securing a 2-0 aggregate victory and a spot in the final for the first time since 2013.
Borussia Dortmund (BVB) has faced challenges this season, currently holding the fifth position in the Bundesliga table, trailing champions Bayer Leverkusen by 24 points.
Despite inconsistent performances and results throughout the league campaign, manager Edin Terzic has developed a team well-suited for knockout football, capable of defeating any opponent on their day.
Terzic, who began his second stint as manager in the summer of 2022, previously served as interim boss during the latter half of the 2020-21 campaign.
The 41-year-old, whose playing career was in Germany’s lower leagues, transitioned to coaching after retiring in 2013.
Terzic’s coaching career is often associated with Dortmund, but many forget his two-year stint as a coach with West Ham in the Premier League. Initially, he worked as a scout for Dortmund after retiring from playing in 2013.Â
However, he chose to become Slaven Bilic’s assistant coach at Besiktas instead of taking a coaching role at Dortmund. When Bilic moved to West Ham in 2015, Terzic followed him and remained there until Bilic was sacked in 2017.
After obtaining his UEFA Pro coaching license in 2018, Terzic returned to Dortmund as an assistant coach and later served as the technical director for a year.
It’s a surprising turn of events, but West Ham could soon boast a Champions League-winning manager among their former coaching staff.
