Chelsea to land devastating points deduction after admitting breach – Reports
Chelsea is on the verge of violating the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations due to overspending in their latest financial report.
Pete O’Rourke, a senior correspondent on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, mentioned that it is almost inevitable the team will face a points deduction and possibly a transfer embargo.
Despite the ongoing investigation, there has been no official update or charges against the club. However, Football Insider disclosed on April 18 that the Premier League is still looking into the matter.
The west London team reported a loss of £90 million in their 2022-23 financial year, surpassing the league’s regulations that limit losses to £105 million over a rolling three-year period.
Given that both Everton and Nottingham Forest received points deductions this season, Chelsea is likely to face similar repercussions.
Concerns about Chelsea’s recent heavy spending have grown since Todd Boehly acquired the club in 2022, especially due to the big-money deals made for several players.
The Premier League also investigated potential financial violations during Roman Abramovich’s time as owner, though no charges have been issued yet.
O’Rourke mentioned that BlueCo, the US consortium in charge of Chelsea, anticipates punishment after admitting to the financial missteps.
This is expected to result in a points deduction, similar to the eight-point penalty Everton received for two separate charges and the four-point deduction Nottingham Forest incurred.
It may take Boehly and his fellow Chelsea executives some time to stabilize the financial situation at Stamford Bridge due to the various potential charges they may face.
