Big Boost for Man United as Bruno Fernandes’ Red Card is Overturned on Appeal

Manchester United received a much-needed boost after the Football Association (FA) overturned Bruno Fernandes’ red card, which he received during Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The club captain was shown a straight red by referee Chris Kavanagh for a high tackle on Tottenham’s James Maddison, which could have seen him banned for three matches.

The decision sparked controversy, as Fernandes appeared to have slipped before making contact with Maddison. Many, including the Tottenham midfielder himself, felt that the incident did not warrant a dismissal. Maddison, who later commented on the tackle, agreed that the challenge was “unfortunate but not malicious.”

“It was a tough match, and I think Bruno just lost his footing. It wasn’t intentional, and a red card felt a bit harsh,” Maddison said in a post-match interview.

Manchester United wasted no time in appealing the decision, and on Tuesday, the FA confirmed that Fernandes’ red card had been rescinded. In a brief statement, the FA said: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.”

This news is a massive relief for United manager Erik ten Hag, who has been under increasing pressure due to the club’s underwhelming start to the season. The Red Devils currently sit 13th in the Premier League table, having secured only two victories in their first six games. With three important fixtures coming up against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham, Fernandes’ availability could be pivotal in reversing United’s fortunes.

Erik ten Hag, who has faced calls for his sacking amid United’s struggles, is reportedly “delighted” with the FA’s decision, seeing Fernandes as a key figure in his squad. The 30-year-old Portuguese international will now look to help turn things around for the club, which is desperate to climb up the Premier League table.
