Arteta makes admission over transfer ‘mistakes’ when asked about Kai Havertz
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that making transfer mistakes is inevitable, referring to Arsenal’s decision to sign Kai Havertz from Chelsea last summer.
Havertz, who cost the Gunners £65 million, had a slow start at the Emirates but has recently shown improvement, notably scoring two goals against his former team in his last appearance for Arsenal. This resurgence has significantly increased the 24-year-old’s popularity among the fanbase compared to his initial months at the club.
Arteta believes that Havertz could further endear himself to Arsenal supporters if he scores against north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. Discussing the process of bringing Havertz to the club, Arteta emphasized that while it was not solely his decision, they were aligned with the club’s vision.
“It’s not my decision, it’s our decision,” Arteta stated. “We were super aligned with the club’s vision, and then obviously on the sporting side, we made a recommendation.”
He also acknowledged that mistakes are bound to happen in the transfer market, saying, “Sometimes you’re going to make mistakes, I try to minimize them, and try to at least generate the environment, and everything that the players need to fulfill their potential.”
Despite initial doubts about Havertz, his crucial goals have kept Arsenal’s title aspirations alive. The Gunners currently lead the table by a narrow one-point margin, although they have played one game more than second-placed Manchester City.
With the pressure mounting ahead of the north London derby, Arteta praised his counterpart, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, saying, “I’m really impressed with what he’s done and also prior to that.”
