Arne Slot Breaks Silence on Darwin Nunez’s Form: What’s Really Happening at Liverpool
Liverpool’s attacking force has been a formidable one this season, with the Reds boasting an impressive 22 goals in their opening nine games. Under the guidance of new head coach Arne Slot, the team’s front line has been in sparkling form, but the spotlight has now shifted to their centre-forwards, particularly Darwin Nunez, as the Uruguayan striker has struggled to replicate the scoring prowess of his teammates.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Crystal Palace, Slot offered a candid assessment of his forwards, including Nunez and Diogo Jota. Slot emphasized that while Liverpool’s wingers—most notably Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz—have been prolific in front of goal, the central strikers have failed to live up to expectations. Nunez, who arrived at Anfield with much fanfare, has only managed to net one Premier League goal so far this season, while Jota has been similarly quiet in front of goal.
“If I’m completely honest, which I like to be, most goals we scored came from our wingers,” said Slot. “So, maybe it’s also for us something to look at. Although we scored a lot of goals, to bring our striker, whether it’s Diogo or Darwin, even more in positions to score.”
Slot’s remarks underline the growing pressure on both Jota and Nunez to improve their output. Jota, who started the season with promise, has since gone six games without a goal in the league. Nunez, on the other hand, has struggled to cement his place in the starting XI, with Slot often favoring Jota in key fixtures.
The Champions League offered Nunez a chance to prove his worth, but a missed opportunity against Bologna has raised further questions. Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch noted post-match that Nunez would have been “disappointed” with his performance.
As Liverpool gear up for Crystal Palace, Slot’s comments suggest that Nunez may again be relegated to the bench, with Jota expected to lead the line. However, with Jota’s form also under scrutiny, the door remains open for Nunez to seize his chance, if he can answer Slot’s call and start finding the back of the net consistently.
