Andre Onana Makes Bold Decision on Man Utd Future Amid Goalkeeper Shake-Up

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has no plans to leave Old Trafford, despite reports suggesting that new boss Ruben Amorim is looking to bring in a fresh shot-stopper due to Onana’s inconsistent form.

The Cameroonian joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47.5 million but has struggled to fully win over the fans, delivering several unconvincing performances.

In his 65 Premier League appearances so far, Onana has conceded 97 goals while keeping 16 clean sheets. Additionally, he has made four errors that have directly resulted in goals. While he showcased his shot-stopping ability with some remarkable saves during United’s FA Cup penalty shootout loss to Fulham, he also displayed moments of uncertainty.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Amorim is eager to strengthen his goalkeeping department before his first full season in charge. However, Onana reportedly has no intention of departing, with three years still remaining on his contract, which earns him a weekly wage of £120,000.

Amorim’s search for a new goalkeeper is also influenced by the expected summer exit of veteran backup Tom Heaton on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir, the current No. 2, may also seek a move elsewhere to secure more playing time.

Additionally, United face a potential dilemma in December when Onana will be away for the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving the club in need of reliable cover during the demanding festive period.

Criticism of Onana has intensified following errors that led to goals in defeats against Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Brighton. He was also responsible for two costly mistakes in United’s narrow 3-2 victory over Ipswich. Statistically, he currently ranks 16th in save percentage among the 22 goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.

Despite the scrutiny, Amorim has publicly backed Onana, defending him after the Ipswich game. The United manager said:

“I think he passed this stage last year. There were some difficult moments. But this season, he made some great saves that saved our team, and then sometimes he has some problems.

“But that is normal, and I think if you look through our team, you can find a lot of players with that issue. I think we are not performing so well as a team, and sometimes some players have problems.

“We just have to support Andre, like we support all the players, and prepare for the next game. Forget about the past and prepare for the future.”
