Amorim’s Comments on Three United Stars Spark Fan Outrage

Ruben Amorim has sparked frustration among Manchester United fans by hinting that the performance of three players may be holding the team back.

The Red Devils suffered another setback as they crashed out of the FA Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford.

Fulham Stun United in FA Cup Clash

United found themselves in trouble just before halftime when poor defending allowed Calvin Bassey to score. The defender was left completely unmarked during a corner, giving him an easy opportunity to nod the ball into the net.

Despite the setback, the hosts fought back in the second half, with Bruno Fernandes keeping their hopes alive by calmly converting an equalizer. However, with neither side able to secure a winner in normal time, the match proceeded to penalties. Fulham’s goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, emerged as the hero, saving a decisive spot-kick from Joshua Zirkzee, whose future at the club remains uncertain. This crucial stop secured Fulham’s place in the quarter-finals, deepening United’s struggles this season.

Amorim Questions Squad Quality

United’s recent performances have been dismal, with the club currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League. Amorim, whose job remains under scrutiny, suggested after the match that some players might lack the quality needed to turn their chances into goals—a remark that did not sit well with some fans.

Speaking to the BBC, the former Sporting CP manager reflected on the game:

“We managed to score in the second half after that goal near halftime,” Amorim said.

“It’s harder for us to go and press a little bit high, but we managed to do it and score. I think we had the best chances in the game. In the end, penalties can go both ways, and today wasn’t our way. It is important to say that with the substitutions, we had our chance to win the game.”

He then went on to mention three players—Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Joshua Zirkzee—whose performances were under scrutiny.

“I think it is sometimes the quality of the players… Bruno, Casemiro, Josh [Zirkzee] is improving a lot, he’s fighting for every ball. It’s the quality of the players which helps us create more chances,” Amorim added.

The manager also acknowledged the psychological aspect of taking penalties, emphasizing the need for composure:

“I try to relax the players, and they know that it is something technical – but you have to be relaxed and confident.”

Fans React to Amorim’s Comments

While some supporters appreciated Amorim’s honesty, others felt his remarks indirectly placed blame on key players instead of addressing broader tactical issues. With United’s struggles continuing and their FA Cup hopes now over, pressure on the manager is bound to intensify.
