Ally McCoist Warns Manchester United Against Hastily Sacking Erik ten Hag

Football pundit Ally McCoist has urged Manchester United to stand by manager Erik ten Hag despite the club’s poor start to the season. While mounting pressure surrounds the Dutchman, McCoist believes sacking him now would be a rash and illogical decision.

Manchester United had high hopes coming off their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May, and the club reinforced their confidence in Ten Hag by granting him a one-year contract extension. However, a dismal start to the new campaign has cast doubt over his future, with reports suggesting he has just two games to save his job.

The Red Devils currently sit 13th in the Premier League after losing three out of their first six matches, including back-to-back 3-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham. The club’s chances of competing for a top-four finish already appear to be slipping away, with Chelsea and Brighton off to much stronger starts.

Despite the growing calls for Ten Hag’s dismissal, McCoist argues that this reaction overlooks the deeper issues plaguing Manchester United. Speaking to talkSPORT Bet, as per the Manchester Evening News, McCoist said, “It’s difficult to say how long United should give Ten Hag, because they’ve only just extended his contract. With the new owners giving him that new deal, it would make sense for them to stick with him no matter what happens in the foreseeable future.”

He continued, “It would be madness to give him a new contract and then get rid of him straight away, that wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever. Unless there’s a rapid and unbelievable decline in results and standards, I think Ten Hag will be in charge at least until Christmas.”

McCoist did not shy away from criticizing United’s performances, calling them one of the “most disappointing sides” in the Premier League this season. “They were outclassed by Liverpool, beaten by Brighton, and already after just five matches, we’ve seen for definite that they’ve got no chance of winning the league,” he said.

However, McCoist remains optimistic that United’s best hope for success lies in domestic cup competitions. He insists that the club needs to start taking points from teams outside the traditional top six if they are to regain form. “There’s no doubt that both the performances and results need to improve. United are a club that has to be taking three points off the rest of the teams outside the big six on a consistent basis,” he added.
