14 Injured: Chelsea have a ‘new record’ of injured players for Tottenham derby
Chelsea have provided an injury update ahead of their match against Tottenham this Thursday. With two new players added to the injury list, the Blues now have a total of 14 senior players unavailable due to injury.
Chelsea finished April with just two wins in six games, effectively ending their hopes of salvaging the season.
The Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City, and subsequently dropped back to ninth place in the Premier League.
The remaining fixtures of the season could be crucial for Mauricio Pochettino’s future as his debut season at Stamford Bridge nears its conclusion.
Chelsea are aiming to return to winning form against Tottenham, seeking their first victory since April 15th.
On Wednesday, Chelsea added Axel Disasi and Thiago Silva to their official injury list, and both players are currently undergoing medical evaluations.
The club has confirmed that Levi Colwill and Christopher Nkunku have returned to full training.
However, Pochettino did not provide an update on their availability for the Tottenham match.
When asked about his team’s injury crisis, Pochettino told reporters (via the Independent), “We all feel the responsibility, and we can all do better because there are too many circumstances that have occurred, and it’s difficult to explain in just one sentence.
“We are working to try and improve. We have an amazing medical and coaching staff, all of whom have experience managing clubs. We need to put all the information on the table at the end of the season and aim to be better next season.”
With Disasi and Silva out of action, Pochettino’s team now has 14 players unavailable due to injury.
According to a post by CFC Daily, this marks a new record for Chelsea, with the highest number of injured players reported before a game this season.
The closest instances were last weekend’s match against Aston Villa and the away fixture against Sheffield United on April 7, with Chelsea having 12 players sidelined on both occasions.
Although Chelsea have been dealt recent blows with injuries, there is potential for good news regarding some of their players who have been out for a longer period. Reece James, Raheem Sterling, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Robert Sanchez have all resumed partial training and could make a return before the end of the season.
